Custom website development cost is driven by the work required to deliver and maintain the site: design, content, templates, integrations, migration, testing and handover. Page count is only one input. A small site with a booking workflow and customer accounts can require more work than a larger site built from repeated editorial templates.
The most useful way to compare quotes is to give suppliers the same scope and ask what is included. This guide provides a cost model and an illustrative calculation. It does not present a market-average price or an Anteomnio quote.
Separate the main work packages
| Work package | What affects effort |
|---|---|
| Discovery | Unclear requirements, stakeholders and existing systems |
| Design | Number of distinct page types, interaction detail and review cycles |
| Content | Writing, editing, photography, diagrams and approvals |
| Development | Templates, forms, search, accounts and external integrations |
| Migration | Existing pages, media, redirects and data cleanup |
| Verification | Devices, accessibility checks, workflows and performance |
| Handover | Training, documentation, hosting setup and ownership transfer |
Ask for distinct page types as well as a total page count. A service detail page repeated for several services may share a template. A customer dashboard, checkout and article page usually have different behaviours to design and verify.
Price the work packages
Agree purpose, pages and approved material.
Include workflows and connected services.
Plan handover, recovery and maintenance.
Use an effort-based example carefully
Suppose a hypothetical project allocates 12 hours to discovery, 24 to design, 40 to implementation, 16 to content integration and 12 to testing and handover. That totals 104 hours. At an illustrative rate of $50 USD per hour, the labour subtotal would be $5,200 USD.
If the planning model adds a 15% allowance for identified uncertainty, the allowance is $780 USD and the resulting estimate is $5,980 USD. These assumptions are invented to demonstrate arithmetic, not drawn from a pricing survey. The allowance is a planning input, not a universal industry rule.
The model excludes taxes, recurring hosting, paid services and any work not named in the scope. A fixed-price proposal may allocate risk differently. Compare the actual deliverables and terms rather than applying the example rate to every supplier.

Hypothetical scope and hourly rate.

Identify the requirements that change the estimate
An integration can be simple when a documented API provides the required action and stable authentication. It can become more involved when records need reconciliation, the API lacks an operation or the external system is poorly documented.
Content readiness also changes delivery. A finished page structure with approved copy is different from a request to discover the message, write it, source images and obtain approval from several stakeholders. Ask who is responsible for each part so neither side assumes the other will provide it.
Migration needs its own scope. Preserving useful URLs, mapping redirects and checking imported content takes work. Rebuilding a visual design does not automatically preserve the behaviour and search history of the previous site.
Compare custom development with configured platforms
Custom development can be useful when the interface or business workflow needs specific behaviour. A configured platform may be more economical when the requirements align with its built-in features and the business can work within its operating model.
WordPress's feature overview describes publishing, themes and extensions. Wix describes its website-building and business features. These references help identify possible approaches; they do not establish the total cost of your implementation or guarantee that every requested capability is included in a particular plan.
Use the custom website, WordPress and Wix comparison to examine editing, integrations and ownership. The correct comparison includes the initial build and the work needed to keep it useful.
Budget for ownership after launch
List recurring hosting, domains, licences, monitoring and maintenance separately. Identify who handles backups, restoration, access changes and software updates. A maintenance budget should correspond to defined responsibilities rather than an unexplained monthly fee.
Ask what happens when the original builder is unavailable. Repository access, account ownership and usable documentation affect your ability to maintain the site. A low initial quote can become expensive if future changes depend on undocumented decisions.
Compare quotes using the same brief
- 01RequirementsSeparate launch needs from later ideas.
- 02InclusionsConfirm content, integrations and testing.
- 03ExclusionsIdentify recurring and third-party costs.
- 04AcceptanceDefine what will be checked at handover.
Send a brief suppliers can price consistently
Include the business purpose, audience, page types, content status, integrations and required actions. Provide examples of existing material and explain what must be retained. Separate requirements for launch from later ideas.
Ask each supplier to state assumptions, exclusions, review stages and acceptance conditions. If one proposal includes content creation and another assumes finished copy, the headline prices are not comparable.
Before agreeing a start date, identify decisions that block delivery. Access to a booking provider or approval of the page structure may be more important than beginning visual production immediately.
Use the quote to clarify the project
A good proposal should leave you understanding what will exist at handover and how it will be checked. Resolve ambiguous deliverables before comparing small differences in price.
Anteomnio's web engineering service scopes the site around its content and operating needs. Bring the current site, a list of required actions and the systems involved to a project conversation.
Sources and calculation notes
All cost inputs are hypothetical: 104 hours at $50 USD per hour equals $5,200 USD; a 15% allowance adds $780 USD for a $5,980 USD estimate. These figures are not market averages, supplier prices or an Anteomnio quote.
