Three letters, a lot of noise. Here is what SEO, GEO and AEO each mean, what genuinely changed when AI started answering questions, and the short list of things worth doing about it.
SEO gets your page ranked in the list of links. GEO gets your business named inside the answer an AI writes. AEO gets you served as the single direct answer to a question. They are not three projects. They are three surfaces fed by the same well made pages, and the work that wins one tends to win the others.
SEO, Search Engine Optimization, is the older discipline: earn a place in the ranked list of links a person then clicks. GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, is newer: get your business cited inside the answer an AI engine writes above those links. AEO, Answer Engine Optimization, is the narrowest: be the one direct answer a system reads out, in a featured snippet or a spoken reply.
The names overlap because the jobs overlap. In practice we treat GEO and AEO as two faces of the same work, and SEO as the foundation both stand on.
The real change is where attention lands first. For a growing set of questions, the buyer reads a written answer at the top and acts on it without scrolling. That answer names a few sources and skips the rest. So the contest moved up the page: from ranking in the ten links to being one of the three names the answer trusts.
The second change is who reads your pages. It is no longer only people and a crawler. A model now reads you too, and it rewards pages it can quote cleanly and parse without guessing.
Under the letters, the fundamentals did not move. A fast, clean site still wins. Content that answers a real question still wins. Being genuinely trusted elsewhere on the web still wins. AI did not replace any of that. It raised the reward for doing it well and made sloppy pages easier to skip.
This is why asking whether you should drop SEO for GEO is the wrong question. Most discovery still runs through classic ranking, and the same pages that rank are the ones models quote.
A short list covers most of the value. Put a clear, direct answer near the top of every page that matters, in language a person and a model can both lift. Add FAQ and structured data so engines read you without guessing. Keep the site fast and technically clean. Earn honest mentions and citations across the web, because authority is what makes a model pick you over a louder rival. Then watch what the engines actually say about you and your competitors, and keep adjusting.
Notice that none of these are three separate projects. Do them once, well, and you are competing on all three surfaces at the same time.
No. They share one foundation and most of the same work. We build pages that answer clearly, structure them for machines, and earn authority, which competes on all three surfaces at once.
No, but it is close family. GEO adds the answer shaped writing and authority signals that get you quoted inside AI answers, on top of the SEO fundamentals that get you ranked. Same base, extra work aimed at a new surface.
Usually SEO still drives the most traffic today, with GEO growing fastest. The honest answer depends on where your buyers already look, which is the first thing we measure.
You track two things over time: your rankings for the questions that matter, and whether AI engines name you when asked. We report both, so you see movement rather than guess at it.
Our Search and AI Visibility work measures your rankings and your presence in AI answers, then gets you found on both. Tell us the questions your buyers ask.
